Description

The dying rays of a wintry sun play across Ebbw Vale in South Wales highlighting a loaded coal train rumbling across Crumlin viaduct towards Pontypool Road headed by an ex Great Western Railway 56xx class 0-6-2 while down below in the valley a British Railways Standard class 9F 2-10-0 heads north with iron ore for Ebbw Vale steel works C1960.
Crumlin Viaduct was opened in 1857 and soared 200ft above the valley floor. Construction was of riveted wrought iron supported on piers made up of 12″ diameter cast iron columns braced together.
The line closed for traffic in 1964 and demolition began in 1965.
