Description
Castle class 4-6-0 No.5037 ‘Monmouth Castle’ waits at the ‘up’ end of Oxford station with a Worcester-Paddington train C1958 as an approaching 61xx ‘Prairie’ tank catches the attention of a young lad. No. 5037 was built at Swindon in 1938 and withdrawn from service in 1964. As a Worcester (85A) engine from 1954 until 1960 it was a regular visitor to Oxford during this period on trains to and from Paddington.
