She was released into traffic on 30th October 1937 in LNER garter blue. New numbers and letters for the tender in stainless steel were added after a general overhaul in January 1939. Sir Nigel Gresley was repainted into wartime black with LNER markings in 1942. The next repaint was into black with NE markings in 1943, as a cutback.
