Description

London & North Eastern Railway class V4, 3401 Bantam Cock, is seen on the West Highland Line. These locomotives were specifically designed to offer greater tractive power over routes with lighter axle loadings (the number of tons the track could withstand). It was also the last locomotive designed by the LNER’s legendary chief mechanical engineer, Sir Nigel Gresley. Introduced in 1941, the year of Gresley’s death, only two locomotives were built, though many more had been planned.
