From Hustle to Serenity – The Great Eastern Railway’s tank locomotives.

The Great Eastern Railway served a region limited in industrial capacity but rich in agricultural produce. From its London Liverpool Street terminus, it also operated the most intensive commuter service in the country. To meet these demands, the railway’s designers produced an evolving series of increasingly powerful tank locomotives – from the diminutive R24 and S56 classes (later LNER J67/8/9), through the M15 (LNER F4 & F5), to the robust L77 (LNER N7).
