• Incident at Porthmadog by Philip D Hawkins

One of the Ffestiniog Railways famous Fairlie double-ended locomotives 'Merddin Emrys' eases away from the water tank and coal stage under the watchful eyes of one of Porthmadog's canine inhabitants. This loco was built in 1879 at the companies own workshops at Boston Lodge. After originally opening for slate traffic in 1836 the line was closed and virtually abandoned in 1946 until resurrected by a group of volunteers in 1955. Today the railway is one of the top tourist attractions in Wales.
