
On the 9th May 1904 the Great Western Railway City class 4-4-0, No.3440 'City Of Truro', was unofficially recorded as reaching 102.4 mph whilst descending Wellington bank in Somerset heading an Ocean Mail special from Plymouth to Bristol, to become the first steam locomotive to travel at more than 100 mph.
No.3440 was built at Swindon in 1903 and is now preserved in full working order.
