Painting of the Year
Trent Valley Memories by John Austin FGRA

Once again John Austin, FGRA. Wins the Award

The Picture of the Year Award 2009 was voted for by the visitors to the Guild’s recent “Railart 2009” exhibition staged AT Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon from late August to the end of October 2009.

The winning picture was 'Trent Valley Memories', an oil painting by John Austin, FGRA. A depiction of Coronation Class No 46240 'City of Coventry' ploughing through heavy snow hauling 'The Royal Scot'.

The win means John retains once again the Lawrence Hammonds Award Rose Bowl, his 16th win and his 12th in succession. The rosebowl and a momento will be re-presented to John at the Guild’s 2010 Annual General Meeting.

In a close second place this year was a painting entitled 'On the Turntable' by new Associate Member Michael Flanders of Bristol.

The draw for the winner of a signed print by the President of the Guild – Roy Wilson, GRA, depicting 'Big Bertha - The Lickey Banker' - from the votes cast for the winning painting was Lucy Spears of Stockton on Tees, Cleveland.

Voting took place at Locomotion by the visitors to our exhibition to choose the picture they felt was the best on show. Once again John Austin, FGRA took the chequered flag, being followed into second position by new Associate Member Michael Flanders with his depiction entitled 'On the Turntable'. The voting for the top 8 was as follows:

Train printsNew Guild Book

Haynes Publishing will be printing the new Guild of Railway Artists due in the shops July 2011.
All members are invited to participate in the project, the title of which is 'Emotions Of Railway Art'.
The loose theme of 'Emotions Of Railway Art' gives artists the opportunity to depict a subject of their choosing, with this freedom the Guild hopes to see submissions of a very high standard.
The book will be a glossy coffee-table publication with around 110 full colour pages.
Selection will be made in November 2010, which should give every artist plenty of time in which to paint something extra special.

2010's main Rail Art exhibition, at The Kidderminster Railway Museum (SVR), is to have a theme:
The Glorious Great Western.
It is our first themed exhibition for some years. We'd like to apologise to any visitor to the gallery who isn't that bothered about the GWR - but we just can't bring ourselves to do it!
